A Catholic priest has been murdered in Bangassou, Central African Republic. One more name on the long list of African martyrs, in a country where the Church has been paying a price in blood for years.

The Fact

Vatican News France reports the assassination of a Catholic priest in Bangassou, in the southeast of the Central African Republic. Bangassou is a city we know: it has been the scene of violence against Christians on several occasions, in a country torn apart since 2013 by armed conflicts between various factions and the regular army. The identity of the priest and the precise circumstances of his assassination have not yet been communicated by the available sources at the time of finalizing this edition.

Our Perspective

We had closely followed the massacres in Nigeria—28 Christians killed in Kawel (Plateau State) at the end of June, including Pastor Markus Nyam. The death of this Central African priest fits the same pattern: a silent persecution of Christians in sub-Saharan Africa, systematically ignored by Western media.

The Church in the Central African Republic is one of the most active institutions in conflict mediation. Priests there often play a protective role for civilian populations, making them prime targets for armed groups seeking to destabilize the social fabric. Killing a priest is striking at the heart of the Church’s pastoral and humanitarian mission.

Aide à l'Église en Détresse (AED) and Open Doors regularly document the situation in the CAR. Their monitoring will be essential to verify the identity of this martyr and gather testimony from his community.

For Reflection

« Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit» (Jn 12:24). This priest, unknown to the world but known to God, joins the communion of martyrs of the African Church. His death is not a mere news item: it is an ultimate act of faith. Let us pray for him, for his community, and that his name may soon be known and honored.

Ça a changé ?
