An Europe cut off from the Gospel condemns itself: the warning that resonates

A quote shared by *Le Salon Beige* reminds us that a Europe detached from the Gospel risks committing suicide. It takes on particular significance at a time when COMECE is training its young Catholics in European institutions.

The Fact

A prophetic warning is circulating in French-speaking Catholic circles: Europe, by cutting itself off from the Gospel, risks condemning itself (Le Salon Beige, June 26, 2026). This diagnosis, which popes have formulated several times—John Paul II in Ecclesia in Europa (2003) foremost among them—takes on particular significance at a time when COMECE (Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Union) is striving, through its Youth Net, to train young Catholic delegates in civic participation and Christian presence within Brussels institutions.

Our Perspective

The diagnosis is old, but it becomes relevant with each new legislative turn in Europe. Debates on gender in educational programs, migratory pressures and their institutional responses, bioethical issues: these are all areas where the Christian compass is systematically excluded from the realm of acceptable arguments. The training that COMECE offers its young delegates—presence in institutions, dialogue with European parliamentarians, doctrinal grounding—is precisely the response to this void. Not a lobbying presence, but a witness of reason enlightened by faith, in the spirit of Gaudium et Spes (n. 76): the Church is not confused with the political community, but it illuminates it with its light.

For Reflection

Europe will not be rebuilt as Christian through institutional decree. It will be so, or not, depending on whether its citizens—Catholics foremost among them—carry the truth of man into the forums where its future is decided. COMECE is right to train these intermediaries. There must be many of them.
